Head-on crash kills woman on Highway 50 in west Quebec

A 25-year-old man is expected to be charged with impaired driving causing death after a 24-year-old Gatineau woman was killed in an overnight head-on crash on Highway 50, according to Quebec provincial police.

A 25-year-old man is expected to be charged with impaired driving causing death after a24-year-oldwoman was killed in an overnighthead-on crashon Highway 50, according to Quebec provincial police.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the two-vehicle crashnear Doherty Road nearBuckingham, Que.,just after 2 a.m. Sunday.

A woman sitting in the back seatwas thrown from the westbound vehicle from the force of the crash and died from her injuries, police said.

She has been identified asAmina-Sara Belahbibof Gatineau, Que.

Two other people in the westbound vehiclewere also seriously hurt, but police said their injuries are not considered life threatening.

A 25-year-old man from Blainville, Que., was driving the eastbound vehicle, which crossed the centre line, police said. He sufferedminor injuries in the crash, police said.

The man is expected to be charged in a Gatineaucourtroom on Monday morning, as police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Highway 50 wasclosed to traffic in both directions between Highway317 and Highway 309 but has since reopened.

The stretch of road where the crash occurred is undividedwith one lane in each directionfrom around Masson-Angers to northwest of Montreal, near its end.

Previous Highway 50 crashes

Two Gatineau women died after a head-on crash on Highway 50 near Grenville, Que., around 7 a.m. on Sept. 17, 2016.

Police saidElsa Loiseau, 26, was travelling westbound when she crossed the centre line and hit a vehicle in the eastbound lane. She and 21-year-oldlisabeth Brosda, who was drivingthe eastbound vehicle, died.A20-year-old male passenger survived.

In May 2015,a 28-year-old man was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 50 nearDoherty Road near Buckingham, Que. Two adults and a child were in the other car that crossed the centre line and they were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

In April 2014, the driver of a car was killed in a fiery crash with a transport truck on Highway 50 near Buckingham, Que.The driver of the truck suffered only minor injuries.

In November2013, a 29-year-old woman was killed in a rollover on Highway 50 near Thurso, Que.

The mayor of the municipality of L'Ange Gardien, which Highway 50 passes through, said Sunday there are too many accidents on that part of the highway and the region deserves better.

Robert Goulettold Radio-Canada he can't do much except lobby the provincial government to expand that part of thehighway, which was finished in November 2012.
