NAC captures photos on Instagram with #EmptyNAC before renovations

The National Arts Centre has opened up hidden spaces in its Ottawa building for #EmptyNAC as Instagrammers capture the key elements and architectural detail just as the Louvre in Paris and Guggenheim in New York City have done in the past.

More than 30 people brought their smartphones to the NAC on Wednesday to photograph areas such as the change room, kitchen and theatre as part of a series of events leading up to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017.

The NAC was built as a centennial project, opening in 1969, designed by Canadian architect Fred Lebensold, according to a news release.

However, it will soon be renovated with an addition designed by another Canadian architect, Donald Schmitt, that will open on Canada Day 2017.

Instagram plans to work with other Canadian institutions to host more #empty events leading up to Canada's 150th, the release added.
