Ottawa Race Weekend marathon won by Ethiopia's Dino Sefir

Ethiopia's Dino Sefir ran the full Ottawa Race Weekend marathon in the fastest time, finishing the 42-kilometre trek with a time of 2:08:14.

Canadians sweep half marathon

On your mark, get ready, sweat.

The fact the city isnicknamed Hottawa didn't stop close to 47,000people from running in this year'sannual Ottawa Race Weekend.

Ethiopia's Dino Sefirran the full marathon in the fastest time, finishing the42.2-kilometre trek with a time of 2:08:14. The top Canadian man, Kip Kangogo ofLethbridge, Alta., finished in 2:21:22.

The fastest woman to finish the marathon wasKoren Jelelafrom Ethiopia. She crossed the finish line after 2:27:06.

Tarah Korirwas the top Canadian woman in the marathon, finishing in 2:35:44.

Around 11:30 a.m. the marathon course was shortened by about 10 kilometres to offset the rising temperature.

Ottawa paramedics said they responded to more calls than usual during Sunday'sraces, with nearly 90 runners checked at the medical tent or on the course,two of whom were taken to hospital.

Canadians sweep half marathon

Race organizers bumped up the start time of this Sunday's half marathon by 45 minutes to take advantage of cooler temperatures.

Canadians did well in the halfmarathon, taking the top three spots for both men and women.

MattVierulafinished after 1:11:37 of running and Arianne Rabyfinished with a time of 1:18:23.

Ahmad Sakr got up early to watch the marathon runners take off at7 a.m.,and held up a sign that read, "Getting up early to make this sign wasn't easy either."

"We were actually on a rooftop with a group, and just cheering them on as they went by. It's good morale," he said. "I like the race it just brings the whole city together. It's an amazing time and a wonderful weekend. Everyone is out, everyone is happy. It's beautiful."

His friends held up signs that read, "This is alot of work for a free banana," and "If Trump can run for president, you can run 21km/42km."

10K a close call

Saturday night's 10K run was also moved to a cooler time.

The top runner in the 10K wasMohammedZiani, 23, of Morocco. He clocked in at 28:36.5, a hair faster thanYitayalAtnafuof Ethiopia, at 28:36.9.

The top female runner in the 10K was Kenya'sPeres Jepchirchir, 22, who finished in 31:29.

Five Canadian women placed in the top 10. Lanni Marchant, 32, from London, Ont., finished with a time of 32:08. Natasha Wodak, 34, from Vancouver, finished in 33:51 and Rachel Hannah, 29, from Guelph, Ont., followed in 34:36.

Three Canadian men finished in the top 10. Reid Coolsaet, 36 from Guelph finished in 30:19. He was followed by Kevin Friesen, 28, from Vancouver, with 30:31 and Pier-Olivier Laflamme, 28, from Ancienne-Lorette, Que.,ran with a time of 30:45.
