Here are P.E.I.'s top baby names of 2016

Names made popular by the Norman conquest of England and William Shakespeare were the most popular baby names on the Island this year.

William and Olivia were the most popular names for babiesborn on P.E.I. this year, according to the province'sVital Statistics office.

William, which has been popular in English since the Norman conquest in the 11th century,was also the most popular name in the province overall. It was the fifth most popular boy's name last year.

Olivia, a name first coined by Shakespeare,was the most popular girl's name in P.E.I., up from third place last year.

Both names were commonly given to babies right across the country.

Of the four other CBC regions that have tabulated newbornnames so far, Olivia has been the most popular girl's name in all of them, while William has been near the top for boys.

There were 1,350 babies born to Island families this year as of Dec. 21, including about 40 born at the IWK in Halifax.

1. Olivia(10 babies with this name)

2. Ellie, Charlotte (tied witheightbabies each)

4. Harper (sevenbabies)

5. Sophia, Ivy, Sadie, Abigail, Chloe, Kylie (tied withsix babies each)

Boys

1. William (13 babies with this name)

2. Oliver (12 babies)

3. Emmett (11 babies)

4. Jack, Hudson (tied with10 babies each)

6. Ethan (nine babies)

7. Wyatt, Jacob, Liam, Hunter, Thomas (tied with seven babies each)

Corrections
