Buddhist retreat in eastern P.E.I. expands

A new complex is under construction at Little Sands, near Wood Islands in eastern Prince Edward Island, to house an expanded Buddhist retreat.

The Great Enlightenment Buddhist Academy opened in Montague in 2009 at the former Lobster Shanty motel and restaurant.

Now, the monks are building a new academy equipped with dorm rooms, classrooms, a dining room and several other buildings.

It will house between 80 and 100 people.

The monks come largely from Taiwan and China and stay for several months at a time.
