Culture Summerside isasking Islanders to help break a world record by creating the largest chalk mural in history.

The creation of the mural is part of the Arts in Motion festival. Local residents will spend the weekend creating hundreds of chalk drawings of flowers in the parking lot of the Harbourfront Theatre.

Each drawing will be 1.5 square metres.

Then on July 11, Sandra Zarvie of Culture Summerside said Islanders are invited to grab chalk and help create the mural.

"The current record is 356 drawings, so we are going to go for 400, so we are closing off three blocks of the street, we're gridding it out with help of different departments in the city and we're going to have artists come in and pre-draw all of the flowers and then the community will come out and colour them," said Zarvie.

"Chalk is something that is kind of grass roots that everybody loves. We have all ages that are involved, and it's a way to connect both our artists and our community at large."

Zarvie said in order to meet criteria set out by Guinness World Records, all of the drawings must be completed with sidewalk chalk and photos will be taken as evidence.
