Charlottetown police make graffiti arrest

Police have arrested a youth in connection with graffiti in the downtown area of Queen Street in Charlottetown.

Police have arrested a youth in connection with graffiti in the downtown area of Queen Street in Charlottetown.

The police department has been making a concentrated effort to crack down on this damage to property, deputy chief Richard Collins said Tuesday.

"The people committing these alleged offences may see it as what is termed as graffiti or some type of artistic expression. We have a quite simpler term for it, and it's damage to property under the Criminal Code," said Collins.

"Despite a number of charges over the last couple of years, it appears to be escalating and we're trying to make every effort we can to apprehend any individuals involved."

Police are keeping track of the kind of markings left to help with further investigations, Collins said. Last year police laid about 20 graffiti-related charges.
