Charlottetown pays tribute to veterans at recognition awards

The City of Charlottetown honoured seven people for their military service during the 2016 Veterans Recognition Awards on Sunday at the Charlottetown Hotel.

The awards began in 2005 to mark the Year of the Veteran. Since then, the city has continued to honour veterans each year with the private recognition ceremony.

"With these awards, we recognize that veterans are the real heroes of this country and we thank them for continuing to serve in our communities on a daily basis," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford.

Those eligible for nomination include veterans living within city limits who served Canada during the Second World War, the Korean War, a Special Duty Area (Peacekeeping), War in Afghanistan or service as a reservist.

The 2016 recipients are:

• Sgt. Gene Dowling
• Lt.- Cmdr. Rob Alain
• Master Warrant Officer John David Ling
• Sgt. Jim Sanders
• Petty Officer 1st Class Julie Thomson
• Lt.-Col. Glenn Moriarity
