Confederation Bridge landscaping nears completion

The province is almost finished installing theartificial hills in the landscape near the Confederation Bridge in Borden-Carleton.

After almost a year of planning, the mounds of soil will soon be covered with sod, trees, shrubs and signage.

The province said the hills are supposed to represent crashing waves into the Island.

But right now, the new structures are still puzzling locals and tourists.

"I don't know what it's supposed to look like, but it just looks like a nice little landscape," said Holly Roddam, a tourist from Seattle.

"It looks good I guess, but I have no idea what it's supposed to represent," said Islander Marjorie MacKay.

Darrell Evans, the acting chief engineer for P.E.I., said it will look like a landscaped park with rolling hills.

Fred Leard, chairperson for the community of Borden-Carleton, hopes the area will look more appealing when it's finished.

"They're not going to be able to visualize what it will look like, so we'll just have to wait and see when it's completed, see if we approve or not," said Leard.

"The province just wanted to make a gateway into the village, into Prince Edward Island, to give tourists a sense that you're entering some place, you know beautiful, and to entice them into the province," said Evans.

The project will cost $3 million which includes includes improvements to the truck weigh station.

It should be complete by next month.
