Cornwall voters have options on election day

Residents in the Town of Cornwall will head to the polls on Monday, November 3 to vote for a new mayor and council.

Residents in the Town of Cornwall will head to the polls on Monday, November 3 to vote for a new mayor and council.

Three people, all sitting councillors, are campaigning for mayor. Each one has a key issue they are hoping will lead them to be voted in to the top seat.

Marlene Hunt is the onlymayoral candidate championing public transit.

Cornwall council voted to end the service earlier this year but then reversed that decision. The newly-elected council will have to deal with the issue once they are sworn in and at the council table.

Minerva McCourt said if she was elected as mayor she would address residentsconcerns about a lack of visible police presence and speeding in the area. Right now, four RCMP officers from the Mayfield detachment in Charlottetown provide service for Cornwall and surrounding area.

McCourt said she would look for a way to make the RCMP officers more responsive to the town's needs.

Candidate Cory Frizzell said if elected, he would bring more transparency to council and work towards having better communication between council and residents after a controversial purchase of a property by the town.

"The most important piece is to have residents on our committees. We need as many residents to come forward and volunteer to engage in the municipal government," said Frizzell.

In addition to voting for a mayor, residents have to choose six out of 11 candidates running for council. The Town of Cornwall uses the at-large system rather than the ward system.

Cornwall residents can vote in the advance poll on Saturday, November 1 and on election day, Monday, November 3. Polls are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
