A Nova Scotia man faces a number of charges, including assault and uttering threats, after being reported walking drunkenly down a highway just outside Charlottetown.

RCMP were called to the Trans-Canada Highway at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and arrested a 43-year-old Lunenberg, N.S., man at the scene.

Police say the man was severely intoxicated and appeared to be under the influence of mind-altering substances.

The police spoke to witnesses, who told them a woman stopped and tried to convince him to get off the highway. Police say the man assaulted and threatened the woman.

Damage to property

The man allegedly then ran to a nearby home, where he kicked in a door and entered illegally. The people in the house were startled, but not injured.

The man then ran to the Sunny King Motel, where police say he punched and broke a window.

The incidents all occurred within a few minutes of the initial 911 call, police say.

The man faces charges of assault, two counts of uttering threats, two counts of damage to property, and break and enter.

Other charges may result as the investigation is still ongoing.
