Holland College grad wins art prize with zombie hands, bats

A recent graduate of Holland College has been named the regional winner in BMO's Invitational Student Art Competition.

Dylan McQuaid is a young graphic designer from P.E.I. who entered the national competition, which honours visual arts excellence in post-secondary institutions.

His work was singled out by the judges for its eye-catching design.

"It's a digital illustration," said McQuaid. The process is basically I draw it by hand and then scan it into the computer, and do all the finishing touches there. It's called a tessellation, it's kind of like geometric shapes and art mixed together. It's spiraling, repetitive zombie hands, and in the negative space, there's bats. It's kind of like a Halloween theme."

McQuaid wins $5,000 as one of the regional winners, and will go to Toronto in November for the opening of a display of the winning works from across the country.

The 12 winning pieces will be on display at the University of Toronto from Nov. 17 to Dec. 17.
