Islanders can now draw EI while in school

Islanders will now be able to draw Employment Insurance while attending post-secondary institutions.

The government announced their new Career Connect program Tuesday.

In a press release issued by the government Workforce and Advanced Learning Minister Sonny Gallant said the new program will help reduce the cost of post-secondary education.

"Combined with more than $30 million each year in federal and provincial student loans, grants, and bursaries, Career Connect is another option available to help reduce the cost of post-secondary education for eligible Island students," said Gallant.

To be eligible for the new program applicants must be Island residents, Canadian citizens or permanent residents legally entitled to work in Canada, have a current E.I. claim, have been out of high school for a year, have been accepted by an "eligible" training programand have the financial resources to pay all "training costs" which would include tuition and books.

Applications for the new program are available now.
