Investigators on Prince Edward Island are looking into reports of a fish kill at Trout River in Prince County.

Ron Ryder,a spokesman for the environment department, said they received a report of dead fish Friday evening in the Trout River.

There have been approximatelya dozendead fish discovered so far.

Ken Mayhew, with P.E.I.'s Department of Agriculture and Forestry, said it's too early to say what happened.

"There were two fish kills in recent years in this particular area and it is in a heavily-farmed area as well. So, you know it's an ongoing concern. I don't think that farmers want to see thiskind of deal either but yet it's not been proven by any means that[farms are]what the cause of this is either," he said.

"Fish can die for natural reasons so thats why we have to be very thorough with our investigation."

Fish and wildlife staff, along with conservation officers, are investigating.
