A new flea market launched in Charlottetown Sunday, after the indefinite closure of the North River Flea Market in Cornwall.

The new market is in the Sherwood Business Centre, at the foot of the Brackley Point Road. It's good news for bargain hunters, and even better news for vendors, who were left in limbo when the North River market shut down.

Wenda Pitre says she is getting good feedback on the new market. (CBC)

"Everybody was stuck with their stuff, and you didn't really know if anything else was going to open, so this is really great," said vendor Donnie Gallant.

Many of the North River vendors relied on the revenue from the weekly sales at the old North River rink. The building's owner saysit's closed until further notice, so Wenda Pitreand her husband started this new one.

"There was just really nowhere for people to go, there was a void in the market," she said.

With businesses open weekdays at the Sherwood Business Centre vendors need to pack up their tables every week, but there are advantages to the new location too.

"I think it's great," said vendor Cecil Murl.

"Nice and bright and clean. And warm, too."

Murl said it could get cold at the old North River rink building.

Pitre estimates about 60 per cent of the North River Flea Market's vendors have set up shop at this new location. In all about 125 vendors have committed to the new market, and Pitre said there is still room to grow.
