Gaelic festival sharing language with Islanders

Gaelic speakers on Prince Edward Island and anyone who wants to learn more about the language had a good opportunitySaturday.

A new festival is being held at the MacPhail Homestead in Orwell.

The day includes nature walks, storytelling workshopsand sing-alongs in Gaelic.

Doreen Huestis is the site director at the MacPhail Homestead and says there's no need to know any of the language to participate.

"It's part of our history, certainly there's been a revival in Scotland itself and also on Cape Breton Island," she said.

"I guess it's like so many places around the world that people are looking at their roots, it's a way of connecting to the past and learning something new."

Huestis says 100 years ago, there were 7,000 Gaelic speakers on P.E.I.

The festival wraps up tonight with a ceilidh.
