Ghiz worst for fiscal performance: report

A new report from the Fraser Institute that measures the fiscal performance of Canada's premiers, gives Premier Robert Ghiz the poorest ranking in the country.

Anew report from the Fraser Institute that measures the fiscal performance of Canada's premiers, gives Premier Robert Ghiz the poorest ranking in the country.

In fact, Ghiz has an overall score of 27 out of 100 per cent in the report, titled Measuring the Fiscal Performance of Canadas Premiers.

"The report measures how each premier does in terms of managing the provinces spending and managing its tax system and managing its level of debt and deficit," said Niels Veldhuis, a senior economist with the Fraser Institute and one of the authors of the report.

"And, unfortunately, Premier Ghiz has increased government spending at over double the rate of economic growthan unsustainable increase in government spending and has managed to maintain average deficits over the course of his tenure."

Ghiz doesn't think much of the report or where it comes from.

"It's a right-wing think-tank from British Columbia and, you know, their policies are more around HST, lower corporate taxes, privatized health care, and those are things that as a Liberal premier that I'm obviously not in favour of. So it doesn't really surprise me," said Ghiz.

Veldhuis notes the top-three ranked premiers were a Liberal, Tory and NDP.
