Girl Guides needs leader to keep P.E.I. council operating

The Girl Guides of Canada won't have a P.E.I. council if it doesn't find a new leader soon.

The position of commissioner for the P.E.I.area has been vacant for two months and no one has indicated interest in stepping forward.

The P.E.I. chapter falls under the New Brunswick jurisdiction where Ruth Lindsay is the provincial commissioner.

She says the role includes maintaining Camp Fairhaven, providing programing support for the units, encouraging membership and allocating cookie-fundraising dollars.

Without a commissioner, P.E.I. would no longer have a council, membership could dip, and decisions would be made in New Brunswick.

"Guiders at the unit level would struggle a little bit more because they wouldn't have a contact that was closer to them. I think they'd feel a sense of isolation which is certainly not where we want them to be," said Lindsay.

"And they have a lot of initiatives that are important, and the guiders of P.E.I. should be the ones making those decisions. I am hoping we can get it settled soon. And I'm sure there is someone out there who certainly can do the job."

A town hall meeting was held Saturday to discuss the council's future.
