Saturday may officially be international Human Rights Day, but the Town of Stratford held its own celebrations on Friday.

Students gave presentations on issues close to their hearts.

Basel Alrashdan, an 11-year-old student at St. Jean Elementary, said human rights became important to him after his family moved from Syria to Canada last year.

"It's a safe country and you have your rights," he said. " I didn't have the right in my country so that's why I'm in here right now."

Human Rights Day was started by the United Nationsin 1950 to establish a universal standard for human rights. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the P.E.I. Human Rights Commission.
