Kidsport sees demand for help rising

More P.E.I. families are needing financial help from Kidsport PEI to help their children play amateur sports, says Gemma Koughan, executive director of Sport PEI.

More P.E.I. families are needing financial help from Kidsport PEI to help their children play amateur sports, says Gemma Koughan, executive director of Sport PEI.

Requests for financial help to KidSport have been coming in fast, says Gemma Koughan, executive director of Sport PEI. (Parasport and Recreation PEI)

Koughan said the biggest demand each year is for assistance with hockey costs. Kidsport helps between 200 and 300 kids play the sport each year, and the number is growing.

"We've noticed in the last month or so the applications are coming in fast and furious, which is great, but also means the demand is probably up again this year," she said.

"It has been going up each year since we started Kidsport in 1997. So last year, just in hockey alone, we gave out $67,000."

Overall, Koughan says the organization gave out $154,000 to help kids take part in various sports. She said they always try to meet demand and have been able to do that thanks in part to corporate sponsors.

Kidsport grants are available to a maximum of $300, which can be applied to more than one sport in a calendar year.

There is still time for families to apply. Applications are accepted until Dec. 31.
