Late strawberry season due to cold, wet May

The P.E.I. strawberry season is about eight to 10 days behind because of cold, wet weather in May, say growers.

Berries need heat to grow, says growers association

Island strawberries should be ready around July 10.

The P.E.I. strawberry season is about eight to 10 days behind because of cold, wet weather in May, say growers.

The berries need heat to grow, says Arny Nabuurs, president of the P.E.I. Strawberry Growers Association.

"If you get no heat, that just slows things down. And add that to a very long winter with late snow cover that slowed the process down of the ground actually drying up in the very early part of the spring," said Naburrs.

The first strawberries will be ready by about July 10, says Nabuurs.
