More than 900 dead fish collected after fish kill

Workers have finally finished cleaning up after a fish kill that was discovered Monday on Little Miminegash River in western P.E.I.

More than 900 dead fish were pulled out of the river over the three-day cleanup. Officials had expected the work to take one day, but rotting fish and murky waters made the work slower.

Rosie MacFarlane, P.E.I.'s freshwater fisheries biologist, believes the fish were dead several days before the fish kill was discovered by the local watershed conservation group.

MacFarlane also said the number of fish collected after a fish kill usually accounts for fewer than 10 per cent of the total kill.

The Environment Department is waiting on the results from water, soil and fish samples to determine the cause of the kill.
