$100K for New Year's in Charlottetown to kick off Canada 150 celebrations

The City of Charlottetown will kickstart Canada 150 celebrations, thanks to extra funding for a New Year's Eve party.

Canadian Heritage will be giving the city $100,000 to host the event on Great George Street, outside Province House.

The celebrations will start with family activities at 5:30 until 7:45 p.m. and then move to more "adult-oriented entertainment and a unique pyrotechnic show" to ring in 2017.

"It's an honour for the City of Charlottetown the birthplace of Confederation to be hosting an event to kick off the 2017 celebrations, marking our great country's 150th year," Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee said in a news release.

A parade, on-stage and busker performances will also be featured in the celebrations.

Charlottetown in one of 19 cities in Canada being provided with funding through the Canada 150 Fund to amp up New Year's Eve celebrations.

The city said it will release further details of the programming in November.
