More than 50 "quality" nominations have been received for the Order of Prince Edward Island this year.

Charles Curley, chairman of the P.E.I. Advisory Council, said the nominations are being reviewed and will be narrowed down to three when the annual ceremony takes place this fall.

"This is a very special award for very deserving Islanders and the council has a difficult task this year due to the quality of nominations received," Curley said.

The Order of Prince Edward Island was established in 1996 to recognize individual excellence, achievement and outstanding contributions to the social, cultural or economic well-being of Prince Edward Island and its residents. Since its inception, 68 Islanders have been awarded the medal and inducted into the Order.
