P.E.I. electoral reform options open

Consultations have begun on P.E.I.'s electoral reform process, and the chair of the legislative committee says the government is hoping it will hear about different options for voting systems from Islanders.

The white paper on electoral reform was quite specific in describing one particular preferential ballot system, but MLA Jordan Brown told CBC News the province is at this point open to other suggestions.

"The potentials that were discussed in the white paper at this stage we're definitely not tied to [that]," said Brown.

"We're actively out there seeking input from Islanders as to any potential system. So that's what we're really here to do, to find out what Islanders want, how they would choose to elect people and who they would choose to elect. And if Islanders want it then let's do it, would be the way I would look at it."

Following the public meetings the committee will report its findings to the legislature, and also suggest a plebiscite question that Islanders will be asked to vote on next year.

• Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m., Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 8, Montague.
• Oct. 28, 2 to 4 p.m., Village Musical Acadien, Abram-Village(Simultaneous translation will be offered at thismeeting).
• Oct. 28, 7 to 9 p.m., Westisle Composite High School, Elmsdale.
• Nov. 4, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Murphy's Community Centre, Charlottetown.
