P.E.I lobster fishermen slowly starting their season

After delays because of ice conditions, some more Prince Edward Island lobster fishermen will be able to set their traps on Monday morning.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced Friday that the season will open at 6 a.m. May 11, for the South Shore of P.E.I.

The season was supposed to start April 30.

DFO warned fish harvesters to be extra careful navigating certain areas of within the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. They say the ice accumulation has delayed placing some navigational aids.

Fishermen on the North Shore of P.E.I. set their traps Friday as lobster season began there.

The season usually closes June 30, because that's when lobster moulting usually starts. Fisheries and Oceans Canada says it has not yet received any requests for a season extension.
