P.E.I. toddler home after Toronto cancer treatment

A P.E.I. girl who has spent much of the past year in and out of hospital in Halifax and Toronto getting cancer treatmenthas returned home.

Cammie Richard, who has neuroblastoma, has been receiving treatment for tumours in her abdomen, ribcage, skull and leg bones. It required chemotherapy and a 19-hour surgery to remove some of the tumours. She also had a stem cell transplant.

Her mother, Melissa Hackett, told CBC News Wednesday Cammie is happy to be home with her family but faces more challenges in the future.

"It will take a couple of years to actually say she's in remission," said Hackett.

"Her type of cancer is a type of cancer that can come back pretty easily; it's more of a common cancer to return. So as far as the chemo, it did a little bit of damage. And then her heart, obviously, and her kidney. She only has the one kidney."

A Facebook page set up to send good wishes to Cammie has close to 7,000 members.

Hackett said the messages from Islanders helped her family through the long, difficult months of treatment.
