Parents pushing for Stratford junior high

Parents in Stratford say a junior high school is needed in their community to stop the daily busing of 350 students to schools in Charlottetown.

Parents in Stratford say a junior high school is needed in their community to stop the daily busing of 350 students to schools in Charlottetown.

A committee of parents has organized a public meeting for Sept. 19 to gather public support for the idea.

"This community has reached a stage where the absence of a junior high school is affecting hundreds of students and hundreds of parents," committee chair Carlos Lourenso told CBC News Wednesday.

Lourenso said the number of students needing to be bused will likely increase in the future.

Officials with the Eastern School Board say they are looking at enrolment numbers, and should have a clearer view of the situation by the end of next month.

The decision to build a new junior high would ultimately fall to the province, and with enrolment numbers falling across the province, it could be difficult to make a case for a new school.
