Police step up patrols as ATVs 'tearing up' Confederation Trail

RCMP are warning ATV users they'll be stepping up patrols and enforcement on the Confederation Trail.

Continued illegal ATV activity threatens the safety of trail users, police say. They also note there has been thousands of dollars in damage to the trail in Prince County.

"They are tearing up the trails," said Sgt. Darrell Gill of the East Prince RCMP.

"Also, there has been some damage done to some gates that are on the trail there. Some of the gates have been ripped down. In the near future, we are going to be doing some spot checks. Hopefully, it improves the situation."

The Confederation Trail is designated a Green Way, which means from April 1 through until Nov. 30 the Confederation Trail is off limits to all motorized vehicles unless a permit has been granted for a special circumstance.

Anyone caught with a motorized vehicle on the Confederation Trail can be issued a fine of $300 and may have their vehicle seized.
