Commissionaires look to hire on P.E.I.

The Canadian Corps of Commissionaires is looking to hire 15 to 20 people on P.E.I. it's holding a job fair Wednesday at Murphy's Community Centre in Charlottetown.

The Commissionaires is a not-for-profit that provides employment for retired Canadian Armed Forces, ex-RCMP and security personnel.

"We have a large contingent about 160 commissionaires in Prince Edward Island," said Pieter Kramers, CEO of the Commissionaires NB & PEI.

"Down a bit from two years ago when we had the QEH, but we're hoping for a rebound and we're hoping to be able to once again provide more employment for veterans on the Island."

Two years ago Commissionaires lost a Health PEI tender to a Vancouver-based security company, Paladin, which resulted in layoffs at the QEH and PCH.

There are jobs to fill at the Charlottetown airport and the Hillsborough Hospital, Kramers said, because some staff are leaving.

Meanwhile in New Brunswick, Commissionaires recently lost a hospital security tender to a Quebec company.The contractwas for security services in the majority of N.B. hospital facilities said Kramers.

Kramers said he hopes most of the 220 employees there will work for the new employer when security services are transferred at the end of this month.

The Commissionaires recruiting event is Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Murphy's Centre on Richmond Street.
