P.E.I. proposed electoral districts: By the numbers

On Tuesday the P.E.I. Electoral Boundaries Commission released its proposed new map of electoral boundaries for the province.

Here's a look at how they break down.

Urban versus rural

• Number of districts in P.E.I. cities: 8
• Number of rural districts: 19
• Number of Electors in P.E.I. cities: 32,055
• In rural districts: 60,488

Variance in number of electors

The average number of electors in the 27 new districts is 3,704, but the number of electors in each district varies from a low of 2,925 (Evangeline-Miscouche) to a high of 4,048 (Summerside-Wilmot).

The commission says these deviations are justified in the interests of better government. For example, Evangeline-Miscouche is smaller to provide the province's Acadians with a clear representative in the legislature.

Negative numbers represent electors overrepresented in the legislature, and positive numbers represent electors underrepresented.

• East of Stratford: -2.93%
• Charlottetown: +7.93%
• Rural Queens County: +1.62%
• Summerside: +9.24%
• West Prince: -10.34%
