Elections PEI has set the date that Islanders will be asked to vote on whether to reform the electoral system.

Islanders will have 10 days to cast their ballots, between Oct. 29 and Nov. 7.

Voting during this period can be either by internet or touch-tone telephone. There will also be two days, Nov. 4-5, when polling stations will be open for in-person voting.

Elections PEI has awarded a contract to Montreal-based Simply Voting to handle the electronic voting.

Five options

Islanders will be asked to choose among four different new voting systems, or whether they would like to stick with the current first-past-the-post system.

The four new systems on the ballot will be

  • First past the post plus leaders.
  • Mixed member proportional representation.
  • Dual member proportional representation.
  • Preferential ballot.

Elections PEI will be running education campaigns on the proposed electoral systems. Information is available on a new website.
