Keeping up with English language training needs on P.E.I. a struggle

The P.E.I. Association for Newcomers to Canada has trained a record number of volunteer English language tutors this year, but is still struggling to keep up with demand.

The association has trained 180 tutors so far this year, compared to 100 last year.

"The classes are just getting bigger and bigger and at this point I'm turning people away from our next session which is going to be in September in Charlottetown," said program co-ordinator Valerie Fitzpatrick.

"The class is completely full, with a waiting list of people that would like to get in, so luckily we're having our five sessions again this year, so we will be having training again in October and November and those classes are not full yet."

Fitzpatrick said even with the increase there is still a need for more tutors.

There's a waiting list of about 60 newcomers on the Island looking for a tutor.
