The money from the Gray Family Foundation of Charlottetown will help the centre, which works with thousands of Maritime children with injuries and disabilities every year, bring its rehab services together in one space.

Cory Gray said he hopes his family's gift inspires other Islanders to donate to the IWK too.

"Our family believes it is important to give back to our community and for that reason we are very proud to support the IWK with this gift," he said.

"We hope that our gift inspires other Islanders to also make a difference to the many P.E.I. families who rely on the incredible care provided by the IWK."

Jennifer Gillivan, president and CEO of the IWK Foundation, said the donation is a huge help, but she encouraged other Islanders to pitch in as well.

"The IWK truly is the place the community built," she said.

"Its history is rooted in philanthropy and as we look to the future of care, we need the support of Islanders now more than ever. We need to continue to evolve to ensure our region's women, children, youth and families have access to the specialized care they need right here at home in the Maritimes."

A rehabilitation treatment room in the new space will be named in honour of the Gray family.
