Fort McMurray fundraisers abound on P.E.I. this weekend

Some children in Charlottetown spent their weekend lending a hand to victims of the fires in Fort McMurray.

When the Maclellan siblings heard that people lost their homes, they set up a lemonade stand to raise money.

"We thought that we should help them raise money, so they could get their homes and stuff back," said eight-year-old Leland Maclellan.

His sister Frankie, 10, said the evacuees would have left a lot of stuff behind.

"They didn't have anything, like they had to run out very quicklybecause it's a fire. Like you have to get out fast. We just needed to do something to help," she said.

The Maclellans raised more than $500.

But they weren't the only ones raising money for Fort McMurray.

This weekend, The Kiwanis Club of Charlottetown is matching all donations made at the Victoria Park Dairy Bar.

And some Island musicians are putting together a benefit concert, set to happen next weekend.

Cows Ice cream is holding a one-day fundraiser, happening Sunday at locations in P.E.I., Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.

"It's difficult for anyone here in PEI or in Canada not to be affected by what we are seeing," said Whitney Hooper, Cows director of sales and marketing.

"All of us here were feeling like we'd like to do something to help, and the idea just came up of donating 100 per cent of our ice cream sales for Sunday to the Red Cross."
