P.E.I. lieutenant-governor announcement expected this week

An announcement will be made within days on the position of lieutenant-governor for Prince Edward Island, says a spokesperson for the office of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Frank Lewis was sworn in five years ago Monday for what was described by the office of Stephen Harper as a five-year term.

It's not clear yet whether Lewis will continue to serve in the position or a new lieutenant-governor will be announced.

Five years is the normal length of a term for a lieutenant-governor in Canada, however technically all lieutenant-governors serve at the pleasure of the Queen, who in turn takes direction from the prime minister as to who should serve and when there should be a change in office.

Justin Trudeau is expected to visit P.E.I. Tuesday.
