Federal minister watching P.E.I. 'very closely' on electoral reform

Islanders who gathered at Confederation Centre Thursday evening received the thanks of federal Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef for their work on advancing the debate on democracy in Canada.

"You've helped bring us to this very important point in our history," said Monsef of an upcoming plebiscite on electoral reform on P.E.I.

Monsef is hosting discussions across the country on what new federal electoral system might replace first-past-the-post. Hundreds of town halls have been held over the past several months, by MPs from all parties.

MPs have until Oct. 14 to report back to the all-party committee exploring electoral reform options.

The committee is to issue its final report by Dec. 1.

Monsef noted Islanders are ahead of the curve on this issue.

From Oct. 29 to Nov. 6 Islanders will vote in a plebiscite on whether to change the way MLAs are voted into the provincial legislature.
