Oyster growers get financial support from province

Oyster growers can now apply for up to $5,000 in support from the province to help them increase Prince Edward Islands oyster production. That's down from $10,000 per project last year.

Oyster growers can now apply for up to $5,000 in support from the province to help them increase Prince Edward Island's oyster production.

That's down from $10,000 per project last year. The province says the Island Oyster Growers Group requested the reduction to allow more growers to access the $100,000 available through the government's Quality Oyster Aquaculture Program.

Money can't be used for vehicles

The money may be used to purchase certain equipment to help in the oyster production, but may not be used for such things as vehicles, boats or wages.

"We want to see the oyster industry continue to thrive on Prince Edward Island and this program will help strengthen production abilities for at least 20 different growers across the province," Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Alan McIsaac said in a news release.

'Canada's Food Island'

"Oysters are an important part of expanding our reputation as Canada's Food Island, so we hope that his renewed partnership with our Island growers will help expand this important industry."

The aquaculture industry contributes more than $80 millionto the local economy and provides more than 2,000 jobs each year, according to the province.

Growers have until Dec. 2 to submit project proposals.A random draw selection will determine the order in that they will be reviewed.
