Visitors to Port-la-JoyeFort Amherst National historic site in Rocky Point, P.E.I.,will notice some improvements this season, as the park is undergoing $500,000 in upgrades.

The national historic site and park commemorates the first permanent European settlement on Isle-Saint-Jean which is now Prince Edward Island.

"The road and both parking lots have been resurfaced," said Parks Canada P.E.I.project managerGreg Shaw.

"We've done some work around the visitor centre there as well, replaced the decks around the back and we are going to be doing some work to the old house that's there and the outbuildings as well."

"This work that is happening is more of an infrastructure upgrade which will increase the visitor experience when they are out on site. There will be some more benches along the trail and there will be a few minor trail upgrades as well."

The work will be complete within two weeks before mostthe visitors start arriving,Shaw said.

The money for the improvements is part of the infrastructure spending approved by Ottawa for Parks Canada on P.E.I.
