Lights out in parts of downtown Summerside after motor vehicle accident

The lights will be out in a part of downtown Summerside, potentially for several weeks, following a motor vehicle accident.

The lights will be out in a part of downtown Summerside, potentially for several weeks,following a motor vehicle accident.

A spokesperson for SummersidePolice said a vehicle struck an electrical power box early Sundaymorning.

When policearrived on the scene the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, but the fire department was able to get it out quickly. Police were able to locate the two occupants of the vehicle, both under 18 years of age, close by.

The male driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, while the male passenger was uninjured. The police spokesperson saidit is their understandingthe driver has now been released from the hospital.

Several weeks to fix

The incident happened at the parking lot for the boardwalk at the farwestern end ofMacKenzieDrive meaning street lighting onMacKenzieand trail lighting on the boardwalk west of the parking lot has been knocked out.

The panel was custom made and so the replacement will have to be ordered. Itmay take several weeks to restore power to the area.

The city is cautioningthose traveling in the area to use extra caution. There are no households or traffic lights affected by the outage. The accident is still under investigation, but police say it appearsspeed may have been a factor.
