Plastic object found in bread raises concerns for P.E.I. couple

A couple from Stratford, P.E.I., is looking for answers after finding a foreign object in a loaf of bread purchased from their local Sobeys.

Marie Gallant was preparing breakfast for herself and her husband Gordon Thursday morning when she found a small piece of plastic embedded in the middle of the loaf.

"It's just lucky we didn't eat it," Gordon Gallant said. "Who knows what it is or where it's been?"

The Gallants purchased the Sobeys brand loaf last week, and had kept it in the freezer until yesterday morning.

"I'm not blaming Sobeys or anybody, but I don't know if there's any chemicals on the plastic," said Gallant.

Investigation launched bySobeys

Gallant said the plastic may have fallen in from a piece of machinery while the bread was being made.

In an email to CBC, Sobeys Atlantic communications manager Shauna Selig said the store began investigating the complaint immediately, and the store manager has since been in touch with Gallant to apologize.

"Food safety is a top priority and incidents like this are not taken lightly," she said.

"We want to assure customers that we have received no other complaints on this product and there are no signs to indicate this was a case of food tampering. Our food safety team is working with the store and supplier of the mix to determine the source of the object."

Gallant is waiting for the results of that investigation.
