Steve O'Brien named mayor of Souris by acclamation

Steve O'Brien will become the new mayor of Souris, P.E.I., the town announced in a Facebook post.

As of the 4 p.m. Friday nomination deadline, the town had only received one nomination for mayor, meaning O'Brien will be acclaimed.

"Souris has been stable and progressive over the last number of years and I thought it would be good if I could contribute to continuing that," O'Brien said.

The 67-year-old former doctor retired from medicine last November and saw the opportunity open up after former mayor DavidMacDonaldresigned in June.

"I was perhaps always too busy before, and this is perhaps the best opportunity for me," he said.

"With the projects started under Mr.MacDonald, I thought it would be good to see them through."

Looking ahead for Souris, O'Brien said he'll work under the direction of town council to make ita better place to live.

"It needs to continue being a stable place. We have a very good council now who works hard for the town. I'd like to see a continuation of that," O'Brien said.

"Hopefully I'll be easy to work with and be able to follow up on council's directions."

O'Brien will be sworn in at the Sept. 11council meeting.
