Basil Stewart to be mayor of Summerside, again

Basil Stewart has been elected mayor of Summerside.

Basil Stewart has been elected mayor of Summerside.

Stewart was the mayor of Summerside for 29 years from 1985-2014. He lost to Bill Martin in the last municipal election. Martin decided not to re-offer this time around.

Stewart and mayoral candidate Nancy Beth Guptill battled for the lead throughout the night. When results first began to roll in around 7:30 p.m., Guptilltook an early, razor-thin lead of about 50-60 votesover Stewart which she held until about 8:30 p.m.

After then, and continuing until after 10 p.m., Stewart hauled in significant chunks of votes from six of Summerside'seight wards, outpacing Guptill and eventually winning the election with 2,392 votes to her 2,115.

4 new faces on council, 4 incumbents return

For council,Summerside's wards have also been decided. Of the city's eight wards, there will be four new councillors,with four incumbents returning for another term.

Here's a list of the winners:

  • Ward 1: Bruce MacDougall(incumbent).
  • Ward 2: Justin Doiron.
  • Ward 3: Barb Ramsay.
  • Ward 4: Cory Snow.
  • Ward 5: Greg Campbell (incumbent).
  • Ward 6: Norma McColeman(incumbent).
  • Ward 7: Brian McFeely (acclaimed incumbent).
  • Ward 8: Carrie Adams.

Tight races among candidates for council included Ward 8, where Carrie Adams beat incumbentTyler DesRoches by only five votes 456 to 451.

And in Ward 3, Barb Ramsay unseated incumbent Gordie Whitlock by 33 votes.

All of the results are still unofficial. Candidates have until Nov. 14 to request a judicial recount, and will be official declared on Nov. 19.
