"Strong southerly winds ahead of tomorrow's cold front have driven temperatures into record territory," said CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland.

"We will probably see records fall Saturday as well before the temperatures drop."

The high temperatures are part of the same system that will bring heavy rain to Island, starting overnight Friday.

When does P.E.I. get January thaws?

January thaws are not uncommon on the Island, and at CBC P.E.I. we were wondering if there is a particular time in January that they are more common.

But it turns out the answer is no. Stretches of days where the temperature climbs above zero are pretty much randomly distributed over the last 20 years.
