Warren Sapp, former NFL star, hams it up with P.E.I. tuna

NFL Hall-of-Famer and former Super Bowl champion Warren Sapp appears to have enjoyed his trip to P.E.I., posting pictures of his tuna fishing excursion off North Lake to his Instagram account.

Sapp's boatcaught and released four tuna weighing between 500 and 900 pounds, said Lucas Lesperance, the charter boat captain at PEI Sea Adventures, who took him on the excursion.

"He was over the moon," Lesperance said. "When you have a 900-pound fish up beside the boat, that's quite a thrill."

It was thrill for Lesperance, too.

"It's not everyday you have an NFL Super Bowl champion and Hall-of-Famer aboard your boat," he said.

Sapp, listed as 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds during his playing days with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders, leaned over the boat to pose with the fish he reeled in.

Back on the wharf he had some fun posing with another giant tuna that was caught by a commercial fisherman.

Word seems to be spreading among former NFL players that P.E.I. is the place to come to catch tuna. Last summer, Lesperance took former Dallas Cowboys player Gerald Sensabaugh out fishing, and he said Sapp has already booked a week next summer to come back again.
