Officials at Charlottetown's Queen Elizabeth Hospital expect more people will visit patients when parking fees are lifted at the end of the month.

Starting Friday, it will be free to park at the hospital. Currently, parking is free for the first half hour and $1.50 for each hour to a maximum of $7.

"With the elimination of parking fees we anticipate even more visitors coming to the hospital to see patients," said Queen Elizabeth Hospital CAO Jamie MacDonald.

Health PEI says more than 1,200 vehicles, mostly belonging to patients, use the parking lot at the QEH every day.

Once the fee at the QEH is lifted, parking will be free at all Island hospitals.

Health PEI says security personnel will continue to have a presence in the parking lot to monitor traffic and assist individuals when needed.
