RCMP hitting snowmobile trails

RCMP on P.E.I. are stepping up patrols of snowmobile trails this winter.

Police will patrol jointly with the P.E.I. Snowmobile Association

RCMP Sgt. Leanne Butler says police will be patrolling different trails at random times. (CBC)

The patrols are a joint effort between the P.E.I. Snowmobile Association and the provincial Department of Environment, Labour and Justice.

Safety stops will set up at random times throughout the winter.

"We'll be looking for a number of things. Of course, driving safely within the right speed, also driving without alcohol because being on a snowmobile you can also be charged with impaired driving," said RCMP Sgt. Leanne Butler.

"They will also be looking for the proper papers on your Ski-doos and also the trail association will be looking for their trail permits."

Butler said the association and RCMP have done joint patrols in the past, but there will be a more concerted effort this year.

The P.E.I. Snowmobile Association is the leaseholder of the Confederation Trail during the winter months, and issues permits for drivers to have access. The money is used to maintain the trail system.
