Springfield head-on collision on Highway 2 kills Summerside-area man

Police say a man in his seventies is dead and two people are injured following a head-on crash on Highway 2 in Springfield, P.E.I., Saturday evening.

Police say one man is dead after a head-on crash betweentwocars on Highway 2 inSpringfield, P.E.I.,Saturday.

Cpl. ScottStevenson,RCMP media relations officer,said a manin his seventiesfrom the Summerside area waspronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP say hewas travelling west on Highway 2 in a Toyota Camrywhen the collision occurred.

A female driver in aToyota Matrix travelling eastwas taken to hospital with serious injuries. A male passenger in the same vehicle was sent to hospital withnon-life threatening injuries.

Stevenson said a call was received at 5:05 p.m. from an eyewitness who had seen the head-on collision between two vehicles.

The accident closed Highway 2 betweenMill Road and Highway 8 and traffic was detoured around the area as East Prince RCMP and first responders including Island EMS and the Kensington Fire Departmentworked at the scene of the collision.

Acollision analyst was also on scene to determinethe cause of the crash. Stevenson said it is too early in the investigation to say what happened.

The section of highway was reopened shortly at 8:30 p.m.

It was raining at the time of the accident andStevenson askedmotorists to adjust their driving to the conditions.
