Spring Park might not reopen in fall

Charlottetown's Spring Park Elementary School might not be ready to open in the fall because mould repairs are more complicated than those at Morell Consolidated School, which will likely reopen in September, says P.E.I.'s deputy minister of education.

Charlottetown's Spring Park Elementary School might not be ready to open in the fall because mould repairs are more complicated than those at Morell Consolidated, says P.E.I.'s deputy minister of education.

Both schools have been closed since early January due to mould infestation. The closure hasaffected 626 students and about 85 staff. Morell Consolidated is expected to reopen in September.

"The issue of Spring Park is a little more complicated," said Sandy MacDonald. "The school is older than Morell. It has more students. It's in poorer shape and we think it's going to cost more. We'd like to talk to the parents about Spring Park. We're not saying that it won't be operational, but before we start ripping and tearing, we'd like to talk to them about what information we have."

A meeting will be held for Spring Park parents on April 13 to brief them on the situation.

MacDonald won't reveal anything before then.
