Championship games are being played Sunday in P.E.I.'s annual Spud Hockey Tournament.

Young hockey players on 71 teams from across Atlantic Canada have been playing in arenas in the Charlottetown area since the four-day tournament began Jan. 28.

The tournament features five divisions - Novice AA, Atom AAA, PeeWee AAA, Bantam AAA and Midget AAA.

It has been held for the past 40 years and is a fundraiser for the Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association.

The profits from the ticket sales help to keep hockey registration fees lower.

Organizer Bruce Donaldson says the tournament offers good hockey to watch.

"These kids are all triple A so it's the highest level we have in Atlantic Canada in terms of the age and skill group so it's great to watch, the hockey is very good, you know, the competitiveness," said Donaldson.

The tournament is also good for local businesses.

"It certainly adds quite a boost to the Charlottetown area, most of the hotels are full," said Donaldson.
